How to check your toilet to see if it is running

  • Remove your toilet tank lid.

  • Add some food coloring dye into the tank and stir the water gently to get an even color consistency.

  • Check back in 15 minutes and look to see if the water in the bowl has changed from clear to the same color as the dye.

  • If colored dye from tank leaked into bowl, it is time to call for service.

How to get rid of hard water lines in your toilet bowl

  • Try using a pumice stick directly on the hard water stain line. Wet the pumice stick and gently rub it back and forth until the stain disappears and the pumice stick slowly disintegrates.

  • Be sure to purchase a pumice stick that is specifically for cleaning toilets.

Reduce service calls

  • If you add chlorine tablets to your toilet tank to try to clean your bowl, you are more than likely damaging the parts inside the tank, such as the ballcock and flapper from the high concentration of the chlorine.

Recommendations on toilet brand: Toto Toilets

  • No better gravity flushing system is available on the market.

  • An enlarged and glazed trapway in the bowl improves flushing and reduces clogs.

  • Cefiontect Glazing on all specified models prevents debris from sticking to surfaces.

  • Skirted toilet designs on some models will fit 10”, 12” and 14” rough ins and eliminate the exposed trap on side of the bowl.

Garbage Disposals

  • Use cold water only to operate your disposal.

  • Once or twice a month, fill your disposal with ice from your freezer and turn it on.

Reduce disposal odors

  • Reduce disposal odors by feeding lemon and orange rinds into your disposal while running cold water.

Unit spins but waste doesn't grind

  • Your disposal does not have blades; it has impellers that push the food towards the grind shear ring. If the impellers freeze, food cannot be ground up properly.

  • Try using beef or pork bones—or even a peach stone. Place the object in the unit, run cold water and cover it with the supplied lid. It will be loud, but the Insinkerator is built to take it

Dead disposal

  • Don't fear the worst yet! Just because it is not responding to the power switch, it could simply be the thermal fuse reset button. Place your hand under the unit and feel for a square button. Once you locate it, try pushing it in. If it feels like it went in, try the power switch again, and if it runs, problem solved. If not, call us.

Avoid disposal abuse

  • Don't throw items in disposal that can be easily thrown away in your trash can, as those items can clog the circumference of the drain pipe from the disposal outlet all the way to the soil stack. If that occurs, a new drain line will be needed.

  • Stringy vegetable stalks and husks tend not to grind well. They will stick to the side of the grind chamber and prevent water from draining.

  • If your disposal is not operating and is out of warranty, please call us. We will recommend an Insinkerator PRO Model with an extended warranty that will fit your needs and budget.

Reduce Accidental Scalding and Save Energy

  • Gas Hot Water Heaters are set to the hot position on the thermostat as recommended by the manufacturer. This should be around 125 degrees, do not trust the setting without testing the temperature with a digital thermometer or even an oven thermometer.

  • After your water heater has been installed, wait a couple of hours and check the water temperature at your kitchen sink. If you are at the 120-125 degree range, you can leave your water heater thermostat setting alone. However, if you are above 125 degrees, turn it down.

  • Check the water temperature the next day after the heater has depleted its storage and then heats back up to temperature.

  • Turning down your temperature will protect you and your family, plus save gas.

Insufficient hot water

  • If your water heater still has plenty of warranty left, but not enough hot water capacity, no problem. Let us install a Safety Thermal Mixing Valve and increase your output by 25%.

Protect living space and water heater

  • Add a drain pan to your new water heater installation. Sometimes the pan can have a pipe connected to a drain or a sump basin.

  • Add a water alarm to your pan. It will sound an alert signal to notify you of trouble if the heater is leaking or if the relief valve has discharged.

  • Protect your water heater with a properly sized thermal expansion tank.
